Meet Jennifer Downey, Bunge's Global Supply Chain Manager for Protein and Lecithin. With 30 years of experience in the food logistics industry, she brings a wealth of knowledge and a passion for problem-solving to our customers. Read how she does it.
I've worked in almost every aspect of food logistics – from managing warehouses and negotiating contracts to coordinating imports/exports and everything in between. What excites me is that every day brings a new challenge. Supply chain disruptions can significantly impact our customers' bottom line, and I'm on the front lines ensuring smooth sailing. It's incredibly rewarding to be their trusted problem-solver.
Currently, shipments from Asia require extra attention. Traditional transportation routes are impacted by local unrest, unsafe seaways and weather. While the world relies on this region, these global events create ripples. For example, conflicts in Eastern Europe and the Middle East, force carriers to find safer routes, sometimes tripling transit times and straining freight capacity. To resolve these challenges, Bunge employs a multi-pronged approach. We collaborate closely with our logistics partners to optimize delivery schedules. We leverage alternative transportation methods like rail, short sea shipping, or a combination of both. And we also maximize freight capacity by consolidating orders from multiple customers, increasing payloads and efficiency. Strategic warehousing also plays a crucial role, positioning inventory closer to customers to reduce delivery times.
Fluctuating shipping rates present another hurdle for food manufacturers. Bunge focuses on building strong partnerships with logistics providers to negotiate better rates and work proactively with our partners to anticipate and navigate market fluctuations.
As sustainability takes center stage, Bunge prioritizes minimizing its carbon footprint. We utilize rail and ocean freight whenever possible, significantly reducing our logistics emissions. Trucking is minimized and prioritized for low-emission vehicles. We strategically locate warehouses near ports to minimize inland transportation, and we constantly optimize container space by blending customer loads.
For me and my team, it's about being more than just a logistics provider. We're a value-added partner dedicated to ensuring orders reach their destination cost-effectively and seamlessly. We listen intently to our customers' needs. This customer-centric approach is embedded in every interaction. Our supply chain team is present from the very first client meeting, ready to answer questions and address any existing logistical concerns. Bunge believes in proactive communication and transparency. We don't just arrange logistics; we monitor deliveries, so our customers don't have to. We provide weekly reports detailing delivered goods, items in transit, and future orders, ensuring alignment with their production schedules and proactively addressing any potential disruptions.
