Best in Class

The best approaches, applied everywhere

Enhanced analytics, optimized assets and improved processes generated over $100 million in savings across the company during the year.

Best-in-class approaches spread throughout Bunge’s operations in 2015. Enhanced analytics, optimized assets and improved processes generated over $100 million in savings across the company during the year.

Teams produced savings at nearly every point of our integrated value chain—from industrial efficiency and product quality enhancements in our oilseed-processing plants, through domestic logistics and ocean freight in Agribusiness, to supply chain management and commercial pricing in Food & Ingredients. Following best-in-class principles, approaches pioneered in one part of the business are spreading to other operations. The Bunge Management Operating System (BMOS), a manufacturing excellence methodology first introduced in F&I oil packaging facilities, has been applied in corn and wheat mills and is being rolled out in crushing plants and refineries. And the Facility Analysis Process (FAP) is quickly moving beyond oilseed processing to our refining operations.

FAP is a prime example of the global application and bottom line impact of Bunge’s best in class strategy. Started in late 2014, FAP targets facilities with the largest potential benefits based on best-in-class benchmarks, and applies a methodological approach to close performance gaps at multiple points in each location.

Global specialists and plant teams work together to identify high-payback improvement opportunities through pre-planning and analysis and weeklong deep-dive projects on site at our facilities. Follow-on operational changes and capital investments are made to implement operational improvements that drive plant performance and profitability in the short and medium-term. Improvements and best practices are then shared through a vibrant global community of practice, with experts from every region supported by internal social networking tools.

More than 1,000 improvement opportunities at 23 plants in eight countries have been identified so far. The FAP methodology and approach are now being applied within the Food & Ingredients segment. Over the next 15 months, the program will target 15 refineries with the largest financial opportunity. Five analyses were already completed in 2015.

Teams produced savings at nearly every point of our integrated value chain.
