Safety Policy & Rules

Each Bunge facility around the world must adhere to our Safety Policy and our Global Safety Rules, which prescribe various safety practices, including work habits, use of protective equipment, machinery operation and hazardous materials handling, as well as all relevant national, regional and local regulations.

BUNGE SAFETY POLICY

BUNGE GLOBAL SAFETY RULES

The following safety rules are applicable to all personnel at all Bunge locations. These rules are minimum global standards and may be superseded by more stringent requirements of any country, regional, local or site-specific standard or rule.

All personnel are required to follow the listed safety rules and any training they have received or any more stringent standards that they have been informed of. Violations of any safety rule may result in disciplinary action against the person and/or his employer up to and including removal from the site and termination of employment or contracts.

  1. All accidents/incidents must be reported to your supervisor/Bunge representative immediately.
  2. All unsafe conditions and acts shall be reported to your supervisor/Bunge representative immediately.
  3. All incidents must be fully investigated to determine the underlying causes and contributing factors of the incident. Corrective actions must be implemented to prevent recurrence of similar incidents. The results of the investigation will be shared within the facility and with other facilities that have the potential for a similar incident.
  4. Maintain good housekeeping at all times.
    1. All exits, aisles and stairs must be kept free from obstruction.
    2. Access to fire extinguishers, hoses, valves and hydrants must be kept free from obstruction.
    3. Tools, electrical cords, and hoses must be stored properly when not in use.
  5. Smoking is permitted in designated areas only.
  6. No one shall work while ability or alertness is impaired due to fatigue, illness, alcohol or drugs, including prescription and non-prescription drugs.
  7. Personal protective equipment shall be properly used when required according to local procedures and shall be maintained in good condition. PPE includes, but is not limited to:
    1. Hard hats or bump caps
    2. Safety glasses with side shields
    3. Face shields
    4. Gloves
    5. Safety-toe shoes
    6. Hearing protection
    7. Respiratory protection
    8. Fall Protection Harness
    9. Personal Flotation Device or Life Jackets
  8. A site specific Emergency Action Plan will be in place and all personnel will be informed of and understand the plan.
  9. Use designated walkways, stairs, ladders, roads or other access ways to enter and exit all work locations.
  10. Powered vehicles, including forklifts, earthmoving equipment, cranes, and personnel lifts shall be operated by trained and authorized personnel only.
  11. All personnel will be informed of hazards associated with chemicals or supplies used in their work (e.g., paints, solvents, glues, etc.)
  12. All personnel will be informed of hazards associated with chemicals or supplies used in Bunge processes at the location to which they may be exposed (e.g., hexane, ammonia, chlorine, grain dust, etc.)
  13. A system for Hot Work Permits and/or designated areas shall be in use for all welding, cutting, burning, grinding or other spark or fire producing operations.
  14. A system for Lock Out and Tag of all hazardous energy sources shall be employed prior to any maintenance, service, repair, cleaning, or adjusting of any equipment with the potential for personnel exposure to unexpected startup or accidental release of hazardous energy, including electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, gravitational, thermal, radiation or chemical energy sources.
  15. A system for Confined Space Entry authorization shall be employed for any space (bin, tank, vault, etc.) that contains or potentially contains an engulfment hazard, hazardous atmosphere, or any other health hazard.
  16. All personnel exposed to a fall hazard of greater than 2 meters shall be protected by handrails, guarding or appropriate fall protection equipment.
  17. All scaffolding shall be constructed under the supervision of a competent person.
  18. All work involving excavation shall be approved by a Bunge Supervisor prior to commencement to ensure that underground hazards (pipelines, electrical lines, etc.) and potential for undermining of surrounding structures are avoided.
  19. Any excavation or trench deeper than 1.5 meters shall be properly shored or sloped to prevent the potential for entrapment and provided with safe means of egress.
  20. All cranes, hoists, slings, chains and other lifting devices shall be inspected prior to use and verified to be in adequate condition. Proper rigging practices must be used.
  21. Only properly trained and qualified personnel shall work on electrical equipment.
  22. All containers and vessels of flammable liquids (e.g., hexane, acetone, etc.) shall be bonded and grounded during transfer operations.
  23. All necessary machine guarding shall be in place prior to operation of any equipment.
  24. All portable tools and associated safety devices must be maintained in good condition and immediately repaired or replaced if damaged.
  25. Use of temporary power, water or steam must be from approved locations and appropriately installed to protect personnel from exposure to hazardous energy.
  26. Use of fire hydrants and hoses for cleaning or any other use other than fire fighting must be approved by Bunge Management.
  27. Appropriate warning signs, barricades or barriers must be used for all potentially hazardous conditions (e.g., open pits, missing handrail, chemical spill, rail or traffic movement, etc.).

Never operate equipment or perform any task for which you have not been trained. Consult with your Bunge supervisor if any safety instruction is unclear or additional safety measures are needed.
