OUR PURPOSE: Improving the Global Food Production Chain
Imagine a chain of activities that stretches from the farm to your table, bridging space and time to bring crops harvested by farmers in one place to consumers in another, dependably, efficiently, safely and affordably. This is the global food production chain, and Bunge operates along its entire length. We sell fertilizer to farmers, we buy their crops, store them, move them and turn them into value-added products – feed for animals, flour, vegetable oil, sugar and biofuels.
Every day, Bunge helps deliver food to billions of people all over the world. It is a challenge that continues to grow. A 70 percent increase in food production will be required to meet the needs of a population that is projected to swell from six billion people today to nine billion people in 2050. Commensurate with population growth, improvements in living standards globally are also driving increased demand for meat and other high-value food products.
Agricultural products also help the world meet its energy needs and reduce its dependency on fossil fuels. Demand continues to grow for renewable fuels, like ethanol from sugarcane, that help the world move with less impact on the environment.
While the need for agricultural products is growing, new land available for agriculture is limited and often has ecological value. Agriculture also consumes natural resources and creates environmental impacts. Leaders in the food production chain must work with partners and stakeholders to find solutions that ensure we are able to produce more with less.
Bunge's purpose is to improve the global food production chain from end to end – how food is grown, stored, processed, transported and distributed – to meet the needs of people today and tomorrow while conserving the natural resources on which our world depends.
