Bunge's environmental center in Gaspar
Bunge maintains initiatives in Brazil that promote environmental responsibility, conservation, education and community involvement. Our commitment to sustainability is described in our Policy of Sustainability in Brazil.

Below are some examples of how Bunge promotes sustainability in Brazil. These efforts involve corporate investments, employee volunteering, partnerships and collaboration. To learn more, read Bunge's 2009 Sustainability Report for Brazil [PDF].

Reporting on Sustainability
Bunge is working with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the global standard-bearer for sustainability reporting, and other food companies and stakeholder groups to develop sustainability indicators for the food industry. Bunge publishes its sustainability report in Brazil in accordance with GRI guidelines.

Promoting Responsible Agriculture
Bunge promotes responsible agriculture in our work with farmers nationwide. Through field meetings, workshops and lectures, we provide education and consultation on crop rotation, soil conservation, land-use planning and precision farming methods that increase farm productivity and reduce the need to cultivate new land. Each year, Bunge recognizes farmers who demonstrate outstanding environmental performance.

Round Table on Responsible Soy
Through the global Round Table on Responsible Soy (RTRS), Bunge and other agribusiness companies are working with governments, NGOs and scientific and technical experts to create global principles and practices for responsible soy production, processing and trading. Bunge is also a member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO). We buy and handle limited quantities of palm oil on the open market, but we do not own or operate palm plantations or processing facilities.

Cerrado Partnership
Bunge, global NGO Conservation International and Brazilian NGO Oréades are helping farmers adopt environmental best practices, comply with forestry laws and set aside land to build biodiversity corridors in the Cerrado. Learn more.

Bunge Natureza
Bunge Natureza (Bunge Nature) is a dedicated environmental program managed by Bunge Alimentos. In partnership with regional institutions, organizations and municipalities, Bunge Natureza operates educational centers, manages conservation projects and works within the community to promote environmental responsibility, including recycling and reuse.

Figueira Branca Reservation
Bunge Natureza, in consultation with the Regional University of Blumenau (FURB), has established the Figueira Branca Reservation in the Atlantic Forest, a biodiverse coastal habitat with many rare plant and animal species.

Gaspar Environmental Center
Adjacent to Bunge Alimento's facilities in Gaspar, Santa Catarina, this complex houses conservation activities and hosts numerous educational programs attended by employees and their families, partners and area students and teachers. Bunge Natureza also operates a similar environmental education center in Jaguaré in São Paulo state with another under development in Mato Grosso and another being planned in Bahia.

Riparian Forest Recovery
Bunge Natureza uses seedlings cultivated in the center's nurseries – as many as 100,000 each year – to restore forests along the Itajaí-Açu River. Farmers, FURB professors, researchers and students, technicians from Embrapa (the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation) and employee and community volunteers participate in various aspects of this restoration effort.

Cubatão Conservation Project
In the city of Cubatão in São Paulo, Bunge Fertilizantes manages a center for environmental research and conservation in a large area surrounding its fertilizer facility there. The property encompasses two lakes, which have become a habitat for area wildlife, and has arboretums that house birds, reptiles and mammals.

Araxá Environmental Center
Located at Bunge’s fertilizer facility in Araxá, Minas Gerais, this center aims to increase knowledge among Bunge employees and the community about environmental issues. Since its creation in 1990, the Araxá Environmental Education Center has hosted more than 60,000 visitors.

Projeto Pomar
Bunge Fertilizantes is a partner in Projeto Pomar (Project Orchard), a state government initiative which plants trees and creates gardens within a 14-kilometer area on the banks of the Pinheiros River in the capital of São Paulo. This project has reintroduced native plant species and encouraged displaced wildlife to return to the area.
