Palm oil is the most widely used vegetable oil in the world due to its low cost and versatility and can be found in many common food products and household goods. Many food companies use palm oil as an alternative to hydrogenated vegetable oils in response to health concerns over the trans fatty acids they contain and regulations restricting their use.
As palm production has increased to meet global demand, concerns have arisen about the environmental impact of palm plantations in Indonesia and Malaysia, where the majority of palm is grown.
Our Use of Palm Oil
Bunge does not own or operate palm oil plantations, and palm oil represents a very small part of our overall business. We purchase limited quantities of palm oil for use in some products in North and South America, Europe and India, primarily as a substitute for hydrogenated oils. Bunge also provides a range of reduced trans fat and non-trans fat products made from soy, canola, corn and other oils.
Our Policy
Bunge promotes the responsible use of natural resources within our supply chain in accordance with our
Environmental Policy and our
Sustainability Policy. We believe that existing palm plantations should be managed sustainably and that new plantations should be built only after a thorough and inclusive analysis to ensure that environmental and social impacts are minimized.
